Exposure to microplastics may be associated with damage of immune system. Polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) with a wide range of beneficial applications have not been extensively studied with respect to the immune system. The aim of this investigation is to examine the influence of two different sizes of PP-MPs (5.2 and 23.9 µm diameter) on immune system components in ICR mice. PP-MPs were administered orally to female and male mice at 0 (corn oil vehicle), 500, 1000, or 2000 mg/kg/d for single and daily for 4-week repeated toxicity test, respectively. No significant differences were observed in number of thymic CD4+, CD8+, CD4+CD8+ T lymphocytes, splenic helper T cells, cytotoxic T cells, and B cells. The ratio of interferon-γ to interleukin-4 in culture supernatants from activated splenocytes ex vivo (48 hr) was lower in females which were repeatedly administered with PP-MPs compared to vehicle irrespective of PP-MPs size and dose. In contrast, the opposite trend was observed in males. Production of tumor necrosis factor-α was upregulated in females that were repeatedly exposed to PP-MPs. The serum IgG2a/IgG1 ratio was lowered in female receiving large-size PP-MPs. Data suggest that immune disturbances resulting in predominant type-2 helper T cell reactivity may occur in mice, especially in females, when repeatedly exposed to PP-MPs. Further investigations with longer exposure periods are necessary to determine the immunotoxicities attributed to PP-MPs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste in restoring tooth color after coffee staining and its potential impact on enamel surfaces compared with regular toothpaste. METHODS: Bovine tooth enamel specimens were prepared and stained with coffee solutions before undergoing brushing simulation with different toothpaste slurries (whitening, regular, reference). For precise evaluation, spectrophotometric measurements were taken at intervals to assess color changes using the CIELAB (Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage Lab*) color space. Additionally, profilometric measurements were taken to determine the impact of toothpaste type on the roughness and abraded depth of the enamel surface. To understand the effects of toothpaste and brushing on color change, surface roughness, and abraded depth, while also considering correlations between these factors, the findings were analyzed using mixed-effects models. RESULTS: The whitening toothpaste group demonstrated the highest recovery rate (71%) after 10,000 brushstrokes, followed by the regular toothpaste group (48%) and the reference slurry group (43%). The mixed-effects model analysis revealed that the reference group had a smaller change in lightness (ΔL) than those in the regular toothpaste group. The whitening toothpaste group showed a greater change in lightness on average than those in the regular toothpaste group, with an increase in lightness as the number of brushstrokes increased. According to the roughness and abraded depth data, the whitening toothpaste group was least affected by brushing, while the reference and regular toothpaste groups showed higher levels of roughness and abraded depth at all intervals. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Gaining a thorough understanding of the effectiveness of whitening toothpaste and its impact on the enamel surface plays a crucial role in refining toothpaste formulations and advancing tooth whitening techniques in dental care.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of coffee attributes on tooth discoloration, emphasizing the importance of potential factors such as serving temperature, bean variety, and chlorogenic acid (CGA) content. METHODS: Coffee preparation involved the extraction of espresso from four types of roasted beans (Vietnam Robusta, Uganda Robusta, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Arabica, and Colombia Supremo Arabica), followed by chlorogenic content analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography. Bovine tooth enamel specimens were carefully prepared and stained with coffee (hot and iced), with a color assessment conducted at different time intervals (3, 9, 24, 48, and 72 hours). The Vickers hardness tester was employed to ensure specimen quality, while spectrophotometry aided in color analysis using the CIEDE2000 formula. RESULTS: The results revealed varying effects of serving temperature, bean type, and CGA content on tooth discoloration. It was demonstrated that perceptible color differences occur after a 3-hour immersion in coffee, with hot coffee showing higher staining potential compared to iced variations. Furthermore, chlorogenic acid content and bean type significantly affected tooth discoloration, with higher chlorogenic acid levels associated with increased staining. Notably, Robusta coffee showed less discoloration compared to Arabica, potentially due to differences in pH levels. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The findings provide valuable insights for both dental practitioners and coffee consumers, assisting in making informed decisions regarding coffee intake and oral hygiene.

The enamel surface may undergo demineralization due to exposure to acidic substances and the remineralization of the etched enamel is crucial to regain or maintain integrity. This study aimed to investigate the erosive effect of 10 acidic solutions on tooth enamel and the remineralization capacity of milk and artificial saliva by measuring surface roughness (Ra), enamel depth, and microhardness. A total of 80 bovine incisor enamel specimens were immersed in 10 different acidic solutions, including four different acidic drinks, three different citric acid solutions, and three different citric acid buffer solutions, for 1 h. After demineralization, the specimens were immersed in milk and artificial saliva for 3 h. Surface roughness, enamel abraded depth, and microhardness were measured before demineralization, in-between time intervals and after remineralization. Data were analyzed using Friedman and Kruskal-Wallis tests (p < 0.05). The results indicate a significant difference in surface roughness between the measurements taken at different time intervals, particularly between the baseline and after 1 h demineralization. Also, the specimens immersed in CAB1 exhibited greatest increase in Ra among other acidic solutions (Δ: 0.18 ± 0.07). Moreover, only the microhardness increased after remineralization (p < 0.05). Enamel demineralization using various acidic solutions revealed increased Ra and enamel abraded depth, and decreased microhardness. The use of remineralization agents, milk and artificial saliva, demonstrated an increase in microhardness. This study provides insights into the effects of different acidic solutions and potential remineralization agents on tooth enamel.

OBJECTIVE: Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, with millions of people consuming it every day. The effect of coffee on teeth discoloration has long been a concern for both coffee drinkers and dental professionals. To address this concern, this study aimed to investigate the role of chlorogenic acids (CGAs) and the type of coffee in coffee-induced teeth discoloration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High-performance liquid chromatography with a photodiode array detector was used to determine the CGA contents of instant coffee produced by five manufacturers (Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Kanu, Ediya, Coffee Bean). A total of 180 bovine tooth specimens were immersed in the coffee samples for varying durations (3, 9, 24, 48, and 72 h), and the discoloration levels were measured using a spectrophotometer. A linear mixed-effects model analysis was used to determine the significance of L*, a*, and b* values in relation to the duration of coffee immersion and coffee type. RESULTS: Both immersion time and coffee type had significant effects on tooth discoloration (p < 0.001), with some types of coffee being more strongly associated with tooth discoloration than others. The amount of CGAs present in coffee was found to be positively correlated with the degree of discoloration (p = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS: Prolonged exposure to coffee can exacerbate teeth staining, and different types of coffee can cause varying degrees of discoloration. Furthermore, coffee with higher levels of CGAs may lead to greater tooth discoloration.

PURPOSE: To compare the amount of abrasion of four whitening toothpastes, two conventional toothpastes, and seven experimental toothpastes with varying concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were treated with the four whitening toothpastes (containing three different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide: 0.75%, 1.50%, and 2.80%), two conventional toothpastes without hydrogen peroxide, seven experimental toothpastes (concentrations of hydrogen peroxide: 0.75%, 1.50%, 3.0%, 4.50%, 6.0%, 7.50%, and 9.0%), and distilled water. After 10,000 strokes of toothbrushing, the amount of abrasion on the dentin surface was measured with a contactless 3D surface profiler (n= 8). The pH of all solutions, the weight percentages of the particles, and the component of particles in the toothpaste were analyzed. The correlations between the dentin abrasion, pH, and weight percentages of the particles in the toothpastes were investigated. RESULTS: The amount of abrasion of the two conventional toothpastes were 1.1-3.6 times higher than those of the four whitening toothpastes. Likewise, the pH of the conventional toothpaste was higher than those of the other whitening toothpastes. No significant differences were found among the four whitening toothpastes. The four whitening toothpastes consisted of a relatively lower weight percentage of particles compared to the two conventional toothpastes. A strong positive correlation was observed between the dentin abrasion and the weight percentages of the particles (r= 0.913; P< 0.05). Furthermore, no significant differences in the amount of abrasion were observed between the specimens treated with seven experimental toothpastes and those treated with distilled water. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The whitening toothpastes containing less than 9% hydrogen peroxide did not seem to harm the dentin surface significantly. These findings can serve as a reference for consumers, patients, and dental professionals.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the amount of dentin loss following immersion in or toothbrushing with whitening toothpaste (WT) containing hydrogen peroxide (HP) and citric acid (CA). Additionally, the amount of dentin loss after brushing with a WT alone or in combination with a conventional toothpaste was assessed, and the effects of HP and CA solutions on the dentin surface were investigated. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens (n= 350) were randomly assigned to seven solutions of various compositions as toothpaste: The specimens assigned to each solution were then further divided into five treatment groups (n=10 each) : Group A = 1-hour immersion in each solution (ES); Group B = 10,000 brushing in ES; Group C = 1-hour immersion in ES + 10,000 brushing in ES; Group D = 1-hour immersion in ES + 10,000 brushing in reference slurry (RS); Group E = 10,000 brushing in ES + 10,000 brushing in RS. The amount and pattern of dentin loss were determined, and the surfaces were observed using noncontact profilometry. RESULTS: The WT (pH 5.0) caused lower dentin loss than RS after a single brushing cycle; however, the extent of dentin loss after 1 hour of immersion in the WT was significantly greater than that in the RS. Among the specimens treated with WT, a significant difference in dentin loss was observed between Group C and Groups D and E (P< 0.05) but not between Groups D and E. The surfaces exposed to CAS1, CAPB, and WT exhibited U-shaped patterns of dentin loss after brushing or immersion, whereas a wedge-shaped pattern was observed in those that underwent brushing with the RS. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The effects (dentin abrasion) of a whitening toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide and citric acid when used in combination with a conventional toothpaste were similar to those seen with the continuous use of a conventional toothpaste alone.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogen peroxide (HP) and citric acid (CA), key contributors to toothpaste acidity, can lead to dental loss. This study aimed to compare the amount of abrasion or loss of dentin based on pH, buffering, and concentration of HP and CA in commercial and experimental toothpastes after toothbrushing or immersion. METHODS: Bovine dentin specimens were randomly assigned to nine solutions. The prepared solutions included two commercial toothpastes (whitening toothpaste [WT] with HP and CA; conventional toothpaste [CT] without HP and CA), reference slurry (RS), two CA solutions (1.92%, CAS1; 0.001%, CAS2), basic solution (7.16% sodium phosphate dibasic [SPDS]), CA phosphate buffer solution (3.58% SPDS and 0.96% CA [CAPB]), HP solution (4%, HPS), and distilled water (DW). Dentin specimens were performed in two treatments: one with only abrasion (10,000 brushings) and one with only immersion (1 h). After treatments, the amount of dentin loss and surface images were measured and observed using noncontact profilometry. Data were analyzed using an one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test as a post hoc analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS: WT with pH 5.0 had lower dentin abrasion than CT and RS after brushing but had higher dentin loss than both after immersion. The dentin surfaces of CAS1, CAPB, and WT were damaged after immersion, whereas HPS, CAS2, CT, SPDS, RS, and DW remained intact after soaking. CAS2 and HPS, which had a pH of 5.0 like WT, did not significantly differ from those of DW after brushing. CONCLUSIONS: WT containing HP and CA did not cause significant dentin abrasion but may cause additional dentin loss even without brushing. After brushing or immersion, the CA concentration may affect the dentin surface more than the HP concentration included in WT. The amount of abrasion or loss of dentin after brushing or soaking can vary based on the composition, concentration, and buffer in the solution, even if the pH of the solution is similar to pH 5.0.

Owing to a higher demand for glucosamine (GlcN) in metabolic processes in tumor cells than in normal cells (i.e., GlcN effects), tumor imaging in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be highly improved using GlcN-conjugated MRI contrast agents. Here, GlcN was conjugated with polyacrylic acid (PAA)-coated ultrasmall gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (UGONs) (davg = 1.76 nm). Higher positive (brighter or T1) contrast enhancements at various organs including tumor site were observed in human brain glioma (U87MG) tumor-bearing mice after the intravenous injection of GlcN-PAA-UGONs into their tail veins, compared with those obtained with PAA-UGONs as control, which were rapidly excreted through the bladder. Importantly, the contrast enhancements of the GlcN-PAA-UGONs with respect to those of the PAA-UGONs were the highest in the tumor site owing to GlcN effects. These results demonstrated that GlcN-PAA-UGONs can serve as excellent T1 MRI contrast agents in tumor imaging via GlcN effects.

In vitro-in vivo correlation (IVIVC) analysis reveals a relationship between in vitro release and in vivo pharmacokinetic response of the drug of interest. Sandostatin LAR Depot (SLD) for endocrine tumors and acromegaly is a sustained-release formulation of octreotide, a cyclic oligomer of 8 amino acids, which prolongs therapeutic efficacy and enhances medication compliance of octreotide. Since the efficacy of SLD is dependent on the pharmacokinetic characteristics of octreotide released from a biodegradable matrix polymer, poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-glucose, of SLD, the IVIVC of SLD is critical for predicting an in vivo behavior of the octreotide. In this study, in vitro release of octreotide from SLD was investigated using the release test media each containing 0.02% or 0.5% surfactant and having different pH values of 7.4 and 5.5. In vivo pharmacokinetic profiles of SLD were determined by LC-MS/MS analysis of the systemic blood concentration of octreotide after the SLD injection to rodents. In IVIVC analysis, the Weibull model was adopted as a drug release model for biodegradable microsphere formulation. The IVIVC analyses revealed the in vitro release test condition of SLD with the highest IVIV correlation coefficient. By applying the in vitro release data to the model derived from the IVIVC analysis, pharmacokinetic parameters of SLD could be predicted with the prediction error of ± 10 ~ 15%. IVIVC analysis and pharmacokinetic prediction model of SLD in our study can be an efficient tool for the development of long-acting pharmaceutical dosage forms.

Cells are organized on length scales ranging from ångström to micrometres. However, the mechanisms by which ångström-scale molecular properties are translated to micrometre-scale macroscopic properties are not well understood. Here we show that interactions between diverse synthetic, multivalent macromolecules (including multi-domain proteins and RNA) produce sharp liquid-liquid-demixing phase separations, generating micrometre-sized liquid droplets in aqueous solution. This macroscopic transition corresponds to a molecular transition between small complexes and large, dynamic supramolecular polymers. The concentrations needed for phase transition are directly related to the valency of the interacting species. In the case of the actin-regulatory protein called neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) interacting with its established biological partners NCK and phosphorylated nephrin, the phase transition corresponds to a sharp increase in activity towards an actin nucleation factor, the Arp2/3 complex. The transition is governed by the degree of phosphorylation of nephrin, explaining how this property of the system can be controlled to regulatory effect by kinases. The widespread occurrence of multivalent systems suggests that phase transitions may be used to spatially organize and biochemically regulate information throughout biology.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of human blood on the setting and microhardness of calcium silicate cements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three types of silicate-based cements were used: ProRoot MTA (PMTA), OrthoMTA (OMTA), and RetroMTA (RMTA). Mixed cement was placed into polyethylene molds with lengths of 2 and 4 mm. After storage for 4 days under three different storage conditions, i.e., saline, saline after 5 min of human blood, and human blood, the polyethylene molds were removed. With the specimens set, the surface microhardness was measured using a Vickers microhardness tester, crystalline structure was analyzed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the surface characteristics were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: All specimens of 4 mm in length were set with all materials, and the blood groups exhibited lower microhardnesses than did the saline groups (p < 0.05). Among the 2-mm specimens that were stored in blood, the numbers of specimens that set were significantly different across the materials (p < 0.001). Regarding the microhardnesses of the RMTA and OMTA groups, there were no significant differences between storage conditions. For the PMTA group, only one specimen that was set in the blood group exhibited reduced microhardness. XRD showed changes of crystalline structure in the PMTA and OMTA blood group, whereas RMTA did not. SEM analysis revealed more rounded and homogeneous structures and demonstrated a clear lack of acicular or needle-like crystals in the PMTA and OMTA blood groups, while RMTA did not reveal substantial differences between the saline- and blood-stored groups. CONCLUSION: Blood contamination detrimentally affected the surface microhardnesses of all materials; furthermore, among the 2-mm specimens, blood contamination interfered with normal setting. Therefore, RMTA might be a more suitable choice when blood contamination is unavoidable due to limited depth. Clinical relevance RetroMTA might be a more suitable choice in situations in which blood contamination is unavoidable.

AIM: This study aimed to identify the optimal toothpaste for removing coffee-induced stains while also evaluating its impact on tooth enamel through roughness and abraded depth parameters, providing a comprehensive understanding of their effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three whitening toothpastes and 2 conventional toothpastes were prepared for a simulated brushing procedure on coffee-stained bovine enamel tooth specimens. Using a toothbrushing machine, up to 10,000 brushstrokes were completed, while spectrophotometric readings were taken at designated intervals. A mixed-effects model for statistical analysis determined the effects of toothpaste and brushing on colour change, roughness, and abraded depth. RESULTS: Whitening toothpastes significantly deviated from the control (P < .001, P < .001, and P < .003, respectively), whereas the conventional toothpaste did not exhibit a significant contrast (P < .081). Regarding colour restoration following coffee staining, whitening toothpastes showed higher restoration than conventional toothpastes. Surface roughness and abraded depth parameters increased with accumulated brushing. CONCLUSIONS: Sodium hexametaphosphate-containing toothpaste demonstrated the highest efficacy in removing coffee-induced stains and restoring tooth colour. Nevertheless, this stronger whitening effect was associated with increased abrasion. While conventional toothpastes exhibited some whitening effects, the most substantial improvement in lightness was consistently observed with whitening toothpastes. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Understanding how whitening toothpaste affects enamel integrity is crucial for refining formulations and advancing dental care. This knowledge lays the groundwork for more effective oral care products and improved whitening procedures, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of dental treatments.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This review aimed to highlight the aetiology and risk factors of food impaction along with the treatment in each case. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A search was conducted in PubMed from 1947 to March 28, 2023. The search terms utilised included (food impaction) OR (interdental impaction). No filter was applied. Articles related to the classification, aetiology, treatment, and associated factors of food impaction in dentistry and published in English or with an abstract in English were selected. RESULTS: A total of 72 articles were included in the review, which revealed the variety and complexity of aetiological factors and treatment of food impaction in dentistry, as well as the heterogeneity of previous studies. Based on the aetiology, different treatment plans and management should be considered. CONCLUSION: This review indicated the need to identify the pathology of food impaction before treatment. Considering the causal factors of food impaction - including proximal contact loss, occlusal disharmony, morphological deformity, positional abnormality, and interdental papillae loss - different management approaches such as restoration, occlusal adjustment, orthodontic, nonsurgical or surgical treatment could be applied. Further clinical and experimental research is warranted to address the prevention and treatment of food impaction in dentistry.

Objectives: Ultra-wide implants may be used as a replacement if existing implants fail. This study was conducted to evaluate the factors influencing the prognosis and failure of ultra-wide implants. Patients and. Methods: This study evaluated whether sex, age, site, diameter, length, additional surgery, implant stability (primary and secondary), and reason for ultra-wide implant placement affect the 5-year survival and success rates and marginal bone loss (MBL) of ultra-wide implants. Seventy-eight ultra-wide implants that were placed in 71 patients (39 males and 32 females) from 2008 to 2010 were studied. One-way ANOVA analysis was conducted to evaluate the statistical significance of MBL according to the patient's sex, implant site, and diameter. Independent sample t-tests were used to determine the statistical significance of MBL analysis which was used to determine the significance of the 5-year success and survival rates related to the variables. One-way ANOVA was conducted to evaluate the statistical significance of sex, implantation site, diameter, and MBL. Independent sample t-tests were used to evaluate the correlation between implantability and MBL for implantation reasons, while additional surgery, length, and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to evaluate 5-year survival and success rates. Results: The mean age of patients was 54.2 years with a survival rate of 92.3% and a success rate of 83.3% over a mean 97.8-month period of observation. MBL averaged 0.2 mm after one year of prosthetic function loading and 0.54 mm at the time of final observation. Success rates correlated with primary stability (P=0.045), survival rates correlated with secondary stability (P=0.036), and MBL did not correlate with any variables. Conclusion: Ultra-wide implants can be used to achieve secure initial fixation in the maxillary and mandibular molar regions with poor bone quality or for alternative purposes in cases of previous implant failure.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate implants from different manufacturers and determine whether implant-healing abutment interface has a significant impact on implant seal. METHODS: An air-injection pressure measurement test was performed on implants with either line-contact (modified TSIII [TSM] and Bone Level Tapered [BLT]) or partial face-contact (BlueDiamond [BD], SuperLine [SL], ISII, and UFII) interface design from 6 different manufacturers. Forty implants per implant type were analysed. Pressure data were evaluated with Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's post hoc analysis (statistical significance was set at P < .05). RESULTS: BLT implants leaked when the mean pressure was increased to 199.9 kPa. The following implants showed mean leakage pressures of 182.9 (TSM), 157.4 (BD), 112.9 (SL), 101.8 (ISII), and 30.6 (UFII). There was a significant difference between line-contact and partial face-contact implants (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The implant interface design has a significant impact on implant microbial leakage. Implants with a line-contact interface exhibited a higher resistance to leakage than those with partial face-contact.

Skin-attachable conductive materials have attracted significant attention for use in wearable devices and physiological monitoring applications. Soft, skin-like conductive films must have excellent mechanical and electrical characteristics with on-skin conformability, stretchability, and robustness to detect body motion and biological signals. In this study, a conductive, stretchable, hydro-biodegradable, and highly robust cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hybrid film is fabricated. Through the synergetic interplay of a conductivity enhancer, nonionic fluorosurfactant, and surface modifier, the mechanical and electrical properties of the stretchable hybrid film are greatly improved. The stretchable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid film achieves a limited resistance change of only 1.21-fold after 100 stretch-release cycles (30% strain) with exceptionally low hysteresis, demonstrating its great potential as a stretchable electrode for stretchable electronics. In addition, the film shows excellent biodegradability, promising environmental friendliness, and safety benefits. High-performance stretchable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid films, which have high biocompatibility and sensitivity, are applied to human skin to serve as on-skin multifunctional sensors. The conformally mounted on-skin sensors are capable of continuously monitoring human physiological signals, such as body motions, drinking, respiration rates, vocalization, humidity, and temperature, with high sensitivity, fast responses, and low power consumption (21 µW). The highly conductive hybrid films developed in this study can be integrated as both stretchable electrodes and multifunctional healthcare monitoring sensors. We believe that the highly robust stretchable, conductive, biodegradable, skin-attachable cellulose/PEDOT:PSS hybrid films are worthy candidates as promising soft conductive materials for stretchable electronics.

Hyaluronic acid-graft-poly(propylene glycol) (HA-g-PPG) was prepared to induce hydrophobic interactions between HA-g-PPG and F127 PPGs (poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol)) and consequent increases in gel stability of F127 gel. Molecular weights of 340, 1000, and 2500 Da were used for PPG, and grafting ratios of HA-g-PPG varied over 3%, 12%, and 50%. Using rheology measurements, 1H NMR spectra, lower critical solution temperature measurements, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron spectroscopy, hydrophobic crosslinking and intermicellar bridge formation were suggested in the aqueous HA-g-PPG/F127 hybrid solutions. In particular, the gel stability of the HA-g-PPG/F127 hybrid thermogel increased from 2 days (F127 only) to 6 days, thus the hybrid thermogel can provide longer delivery of an incorporated drug. The HA-g-PPG/F127 thermogel exhibited tissue compatibility in the subcutaneous layer of rats. The protein drug release from the gel indicated that interactions between negative charged HA-g-PPG and positive charged drug (calcitonin) reduced initial burst release.

The microbial leakage at the implant-abutment interface (IAI) is one cause of peri-implant infection that puts long-term implant stability at risk. The present study compared two types of Morse taper implants in terms of sealing performance at the implanthealing abutment interface. Three implant systems, one of which exhibited a partial face-contact design (TSO) and the other two a line-contact design (TSM and BLT), were analyzed in vitro using two quantitative implant leakage measuring techniques: air-injection pressure measurement test and microbial examination. An in-house-developed device was used to determine implant leakage by recording the initial drop in pressure while injecting air through the implant. The microbial examination measured the absorbances of culture mediums in which the inoculated implants were contained. Significant difference was found between the partial face- and line-contact groups (p<0.001). Both tests revealed that partial face-contact implants are more prone to leakage than line-contact implants.

The relative dentin abrasivity-profilometry equivalent values were compared using non-contact profilometry with three subtypes of regular toothpaste and two subtypes of whitening toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate and 35% hydrogen peroxide. Bovine dentin specimens were assigned to six groups: regular toothpaste (R): R1 (BAMBOO SALT GUM OINTMENT); R2 (MEDIAN TARTAR ORIGINAL); R3 (PERIOE Alpha), Reference slurry: RS (calcium pyrophosphate), whitening toothpaste (W): W1 (NET. WT); W2 (Vussen 28 WHITENING). Relative dentin abrasion-profilometry equivalent (RDA-PE) was determined by brushing 10,000 times (n=8). The pH of the toothpaste was measured (n=5) and the abrasive constituents of the toothpaste was analyzed by FE-SEM and EDS. The RDA-PE values ranged from 26 to 166, and the pH level ranges were 4.928-9.153. The RDA-PE value of the whitening toothpaste containing hydrogen peroxide was not high compared with that of the regular toothpaste. The RDA-PE values of whitening toothpaste could vary depending on the mechanism and ingredients of the whitening agents.
